Joann Tsark

JoAnn ‘Umilani Tsark serves as the Research Director for Papa Ola Lokahi, a non-profit community based consortium of Native Hawaiian agencies dedicated to improving the health and wellness of Kanaka Maoli, the indigenous people of Hawai`i.  In this role, Ms. Tsark oversees all program activities which support community-based participatory research, education and training; coordinates research development and serves as the Project Director for `Imi Hale - The Native Hawaiian Cancer Network (`Imi Hale), which she co-founded with Gayle (Mackura) Hunt in 2000.  `Imi Hale is currently one of 25 Community Network Programs and funded by the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities, National Cancer Institute. Ms. Tsark is the founder the NHHCS - Institutional Review Board, Hawai`i’s first community IRB.  As the former Executive Director of the Governor's Pacific Health Promotion and Development Center, Ms. Tsark brings additional experience in Western Pacific health and currently oversees the Pacific Cancer Initiative (CRCHD – NCI) and the Pacific Diabetes Education Program (NDEP-CDC) program which provides training and technical assistance to Pacific Islander communities in diabetes prevention and control.  Ms. Tsark a proud member of the `Imi Hale CNP staff, who collectively and passionately work to reduce the burden of cancer among Hawaiians through the development of Hawaiian researchers and the promotion of community based participatory research and programming.
