What is the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

The hepatitis B vaccine prevents hepatitis B infection.  Since it also prevents hepatitis-B related liver cancer, it is the world’s first anti-cancer vaccine.  If everyone who is not infected gets the vaccine, we can stop the spread of hepatitis B and eradicate it in future generations.

How Does the Hepatitis B Vaccine Work?

The vaccine helps your body make a substance called an “antibody,” which attacks and removes the hepatitis B virus when it tries to ente your body.  The hepatitis B vaccine is safe and effective, and it protects you for life.  It does not work if you are already infected.  Therefore, it is important that you get tested for hepatitis B first and know your results before the vaccination.

The vaccine is a series of 3 shots syringeadministered over a period of 6 months as follows:

  1st shot:  administered at anytime
2nd shot: 30 days after the 1st shot
3rd shot: 5 months after the 2nd shot

It is very important that you need to complete all three shots to make the vaccination effective.

Where Can I Go to Get Vaccinated Against Hepatitis B?

..... You should contact your doctor or clinic first. Some health insurance covers hepatitis B vaccination.

..... Through a collaboration of public health institutions, universities, organizations, and hospitals, there is currently a network of free or low-cost hepatitis B vaccination sites in three Counties in the Bay Area: Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Alameda Counties.  If your County is not listed here, you need to call your local County’s health department.
