Why Do I Need to be Tested for Hepatitis B?

..... Most people with chronic hepatitis B infection do not know that they have been infected because they still feel healthy and have no symptoms.   But waiting until they feel sick to be tested may be too late.  The good news is that there is a simple blood test to find out if you have been infected.

..... It is important to know that routine blood tests ordered by your doctor do not check for hepatitis B, so be sure to ask your doctor specifically for a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test to check for infection and a hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb) test to check for immunity.  Only about 1 teaspoon of blood is needed for the two tests.

How Do I Know What the Test Results Mean?

There are three possible results of the hepatitis B blood tests.

1. Susceptible: You were never exposed to the hepatitis B virus and can still get it.

2. Immune: You were exposed to the hepatitis B virus (or had the vaccine).  After you were infected, you recovered completely.  Your body then developed an antibody (a substance that fights the virus) against the hepatitis B virus, and you have become Immune.  You no longer have the virus, cannot get it again, and cannot give it to others.

3. Chronic Hepatitis B Infection: You were exposed to the hepatitis B virus.  When you were infected, you never recovered completely. You now have Chronic Hepatitis B Infection. You have the hepatitis B virus for life, can develop serious or fatal problems, and can transmit (pass on) the virus to others.
